Wearing heavier earrings, comfortably

Statement earrings are worth it. Here's how to wear them beautifully without being unkind to your earlobes.

Every Ivari piece page tells you what each earring weighs, and compares it to a coin you know. That's because weight matters more than most shops admit.

Why it matters

Dermatologists say heavy earrings are the most common cause of stretched and split earlobes. It usually happens gradually, over years, as gravity and natural collagen loss let the piercing lengthen. It's avoidable with a few habits.

Five habits for heavier pairs

  1. Give them occasions. Save your heaviest pairs for evenings, weddings and celebrations, and wear lighter ones day to day.
  2. Upgrade the backs. Larger disc or "lobe-support" backs spread the weight and hold the earring flat against the lobe.
  3. Consider support patches. Small clear adhesive patches behind the lobe take some strain on long days.
  4. Never sleep in them. Take them off before bed, every time.
  5. Rest days. Give your lobes days off between heavy wears.

When to see someone

If a piercing has already lengthened or feels thin, pause heavy earrings and ask a dermatologist. Stretched lobes can be repaired. After a repair, dermatologists usually suggest wearing heavy earrings only occasionally, with support tape.
