How to choose earrings as a gift

Earrings are the one piece of jewellery with no size to get wrong. That makes them the easiest gift to get right, if you notice a few things first.

Look before you choose

• Are their ears pierced? Check quietly: a photo, or a friend.
• What do they already wear? Mostly studs? Choose a shorter drop. Already in statement pieces? Go bold.
• Warm or cool? If their everyday jewellery is yellow gold, a gold-toned pair will feel familiar; if it's white metals, choose bright silver or a rose tone.
• Their colours. The colour they wear most in clothes is often the stone colour they'll love.
• Their life. For busy days, lighter pairs. For someone who loves an occasion, a showpiece. Each piece page lists its weight.

The birthstone shortcut

Many of the stones we use are traditional birthstones: garnet (January), amethyst (February), moonstone (June, alongside pearl), peridot (August), and topaz and citrine (November). A piece with their stone says "I thought about you" before they've even tried it on.
